The USA along with many other western countries signed a treaty agreeing to the conditions of the Geneva Conventions. Treaties trump even the constitution in American law. The treaty constrains America, irrespective of how the party behaves.
The USA is big country and routinely regnegs on its word, including the Geneva Conventions treaty, and the UN treaty that prohibits first strike. Bush dismissed the Geneva Conventions as "quaint".
The US also renegs on trade treaties when it suits it, such as the NAFTA softwood lumber treaty. If I were an American, I would be deeply ashamed of my country's behaviour.

I don't believe the Taliban signed the Geneva Conventions treaty, so they are not constrained by them. However, in practice, they conformed to them reasonably well whereas the Americans have not even honoured them as well as the Nazis did.
If I were an American hawk I would be deeply embarrassed by the way the USA is ignoring the Geneva Conventions. It is fighting an agressive war against two tiny impoverished countries, and it thinks it has to cheat to prevail. What a bunch of pussies!
The US has a bigger military than all the rest of the world put together. It has ZILCH to fear from Afghanistan and Iraq. In almost a decade of occupation neither country has mounted any sort of attack on the USA. They have no means to. How could they without a military, planes, ships, rockets, missiles, submarines etc.?

I believe everyone is entitled to their own opinions. I am an american soldier. I am proud of that regardless of what people think. My entire family has been in the military. My father fought in Vietnam and although he did enjoy his time in service he did protest the war. Both my grandfathers served in WWII and Korea. My great grandfathers served in WWI. I have been to Iraq and afghanastan several times. Mysel;f and the soldiers in my unit never killed civilians and yes I know this for a fact. We did not drop bombs we did not call for artillery at any time. We engaged people that fired on us first. We were very cautious since we did not want to do anything illegal or do anything that would cause harm to innocents. Now have there been soldiers that did do the wrong thing of course. You can go back to any war and find ingnorant people. Were we lied to by the president and led to believe their were WMD's of course. Is everything about money of course. Regardless of if I believe the war is right or not I signed up for a job and the only thing I can do is the best job I can. In any job there are good and there is bad. Now from my experience in both countries are there people that want us there yes are there people that want us to leave yes. I helped a family one day and gave them money food and water and they thanked us everytime we saw them and told us how we have made thier lives better. Now I have also heard people tell me that because I am there I have made their lives worse. My translator is a perfect example. Before the war Saddam had him locked up in prison and beat everyday with canes because he refused one of saddam's orders to kill kurds. He did not want to kill people for the wrong reason so he was punished his family was hunted down and killed in front of him. So was he thankful we came and removed saddam yes. I have also been to canada and trained with their airborne units, and they served in the war as well in both locations some served with honor and some committed crimes but no one is saying that canada is all screwed up and how their soldiers are war criminals just the americans. Poland sent soldiers, china sent soldiers, hungry sent soldiers, britian sent soldiers canada sent soldiers, australia sent soldiers. So if your logic is right then all of these countries are just as guilty as america for committing war crimes and having all their soldiers being criminals. And no I will not sit here and even try and say anything negative towards you. I respect you as a person first and I will not insult yours or my own intelligence by saying I served for your freedoms. Roedy I just want to know how do you know American soldiers are violating the geneva conventions. Have you even read all te articles contained int he geneva conventions. I doubt it. Have you ever been to iraq or afghanstan yep doubt that one either. did you know prisoners are taken in war we hold them in cuba right. How do you figure that to be true. Ok Poor people do not have health care. Actually they do there are clinics in every state that offer free health care to those that do not. Have you ever found a homeless person on the street and put him in your vehicle and took him to your house and let him stay with you for free. How many times a month do you go through your closet and grab clothes you do not wish to have and take them to homeless people. How many times have you cooked for homeless people or offered them healthcare taken them to the hospital give them blood. I really would like an answer from you since you are the foremost expert on how the world should act. Get out of your house and look into reality. I go downtown in my city and actually cook on a grill all expenses out of my pocket for a group of homeless. I donate clothes once a week, And I allow a homless person to live with me only one at a time though due to space but for a week. That is what I do. I also do all of this making no more than 60,000 a year as a full time soldier. So instead of complaining about things I actually get out and help what do you do live somewhere in canada and complain about america in the war and how bad our country is. I tell you this I hope you and your country get invaded by some country like North Korea so you could realize how precious life really is and maybe then you can get off this computer complaining about things you know nothing about and do some sort of good in the world. hey this is for the 14 year old boy who wants to be a Navy Seal. You go for it. Countries need people like you that want to serve and protect those who do not. Start running and swimming now it is hard. You are right being in the military means you do not go out and kill people all the time. We help countries in need give food to africa, help the people in haiti and indonesia, help build school houses in south america. We help any state in our country that needs help from a hurricane or flood or we go help put out fires all for a measley income, not becasue we can not do something else it is becuase we believe in the greater good and want to help. I don't feel any compunction to be polite to child killers, plunderers, rapists, torturers or murderers. I scream at them, and at those that cheer them on, for the same reason the mothers of the victims of Jeffrey Dahmer shouted at him in the courtroom. This is not a matter of disagreement. I am am as obnoxious to them as possible for the same reason I would be impolite to Genghis Kahn, Adolph Hitler, Joseph Stalin, Robert Mugabe or any of the other monsters of history. I want to hurt them as much as I possibly can with mere words.
Soldiers, their admirers and their wives complain when I try to hurt them. Yet my weapons are words and images -- mere patterns of colour I make appear on their screens. I think you are ignorant. I know several people that are in or have been in the military. Do you really believe that every person in the military just wants to kill people? I know several who have came home to get good jobs and live a normal life( one of whom has been to iraq and afganistan several times) Do we live in fear of him no we love and respect him more than you will ever realize. Maybe you need the love and respect of someone to make you feel better about your self so you can quit dogging us.

I wish that people will just open their eyes to see that there are bad people everywhere you turn. It's not ignorance but a misconception because this is what was told to them... or to us about them. It's the same with religion, but do we really know if we are living how we should? I feel sorry for the soldiers who lost their lives before they found out the real reason behind this particular war, because we lost a lot of beautiful people AROUND the world. We could all sit here and hate everything about everyone, but what good is it? How do you apologize for things that you have or had no part of? How do we change our countries past decisions and fu*k-ups (which are many)that we made? I could apologize for the Americans, but will it make all better? All we can do is try and not make the same mistake again. I can't look at a single person and say "I hate you for what your people did to mine". Pain is pain no matter where you come from. If we are misled it is not our fault, it is the fault of the person who misled us, and they will have to pay for it in the after life. Until then we need to be careful of what we say to people, how we say it, and most of all have a true understanding that we are all differnt.
I think its time to bring the troops home and post them at the borders, what a common sense way to really guard our country. I came across your site whilst searching for the truth behind the story of Redacted recently aired on British TV. I cannot disagree that the war in Iraq was illegal from the get-go and do not disagree with your comments and observations regarding the conduct of all participating governments including my own. What glares from each page I read is your anti-military stance and I wondered if you had ever served in the military. I never served in Iraq (after my time) but I have served 6 years for "Queen and Country" and therefore feel that I am reasonably qualified to comment. I have found, from my research, that most of the atrocities have been isolated incidents and that the "average" soldier has probably not even witnessed one let alone participated. This corroborates my experience that most soldiers are not adrenaline seekers as you would portray but honest, hard working people trying to do a difficult job. It is your right to say as you believe. It is the job of a soldier to defend your right to say it in what is left of democracy in this world. Whether the war in Iraq is legal or any other for that matter makes no difference. The motive of most soldiers for joining up is not as you would have everyone who reads your pages believe. I have many American friends and, on the whole, are genuine, caring individuals with a far higher sense of morality than you give them credit for. But again, that is your right. One I would die for. Maybe you could consider that before blugeoning every soldier with your "holier than thou" attitudes.

Even a rude post should attempt to make some point. Just saying "I am am rabid for reasons I will not divulge" is hardly a point.
It seems to me, if someone disagrees with me, they would want others to disagree with me, and agree with them. To do that they would have to explain where we disagree, and then give reasons why I am wrong and they are right.
Howevever, this rarely happens. More frequently someone just tells me how stupid/wicked I am or threatens me in some way, without even hinting what I said that got them so riled, I guess hoping intimidation will change my mind about my entire body of facts and beliefs on the Iraq war.
Intimidation won't work. I was one of the early gay lib pioneers. I received 300 abusive calls and 3 death threats a day on average. I am pretty much immune to them by now. They are just so much noise.

The Taliban are not bound by the Geneva Conventions. They did not sign onto them. The Americans are. The Taliban are not routinely torturing POWs, they don't use banned weapons such cluster bombs, white phosphorous, napalm, or land mines though they do use manually fired IEDs which presumably will not be as big problem after the war is over and standard land mines. So relative to the Americans, they are boy scouts. The Geneva conventions are about how you treat your enemy not how desperate you get and treat your own. The Americans attacked unprovoked, which is by the Nuremberg principles, a capital war crimes. America is clearly the bad guy.

Discussing whether or not the war is illegal is really irrelevant after these many years of conflict.
Only a legitimate authority can hold people accountable for their actions. To date, the international courts have not indicted any individual for starting the war.
What makes you better schooled than those responsible for upholding societal laws? Let it go...you cannot end the war by touting illegal action. It obviously isn't going to work.
How do you know the leaders of the terrorist movement are not like Hitler? Many opposed the war to bring down Hitler. If he wasn't stopped, how far would his expansion have gone?
Even the new US President has not seen fit to bring everyone home. That begs the question; 'Why not?' Is there something we do not know?
I praise your taking a stance on an issue. With all of the failings of the US, that is one right I hope we are really fighting to preserve with the lives of our young.
I challenge you to keep your posts intelligent and factual. Not fighting for what we believe is not an option. Too many pacifists died while placing their heads in the sand. Rather than blast people for their beliefs, do you have any nonviolent methods to solve this problem?

First of all it is not just me.
Nelson Mandela, two of the secretaries general of the UN,
a lead prosecutor at Nuremberg have also pointed out the illegality of the Iraq war.

There is only one terrorist attack of note, 9/11. That appears to be a false flag operation. The alleged mastermind, bin Laden, was trained by the CIA to give the Russians trouble in Afghanistan. In any case, it killed about 3500 civilians.

Travis, this blog as about the Iraq war. Canada skipped that one so I don't talk about Canada here. I write almost every day on various blogs condemning Canada's participation in the Afghan war. Your country is involved in two illegal aggressive wars. My country in involved in one. Both countries are guilty of torturing POWs. Both of us should be ashamed of what our countries are doing.
Citizens of both countries pretend what they are doing is noble. Much of what I write on cnn.com, msnbc.com and cbc.com is censored. People don't want to acknowledge their soldiers are war criminals guilty of a capital crime.
I wish peope would watch the PBS Frontline program "The lost years 2003". The program is still in their archives. What I came away with is when the Bush Adminstration fired the Baath Party and did not hire the Iraq army they all but jump started the insurgency. I wonder if these actions were a mistake or an opportunity to create a job vacumm as an excuse to bring in more contractors for more money. When you consider the way the CPA was set up and the Iraq Oil Law which Bush officials help to write and gave foreign oil companies a large control of the undeveloped oil fields using a profit sharing agreement which is not use when oil is easy to obtain. I think the Iraq War to the upper levels of many in the Republican Party was about oil and war profits. Perhaps we could have gotten rid of a horrible tryant for the Iraq people and had access to the oil fields but in their quest or profits the Bush Adminstration blew that.
If Canadians can tell Americans what to do, why aren't Americans allowed to do the same back? I find it astonishing also that your photos and information on the Iraq war are all outdated, as your photos of "American soldiers shooting surrendering Iraqi civilians" display those same Americans wearing uniforms from the Gulf War and Operation Desert Storm. There are many professions, including engineering, computer specialists, electronic specialists, machinists, drivers, pilots, data processors, cooks, janitors, communication specialists, map room coordinators, intelligence specialists, desk jobs, desk jobs and more desk jobs...
If you really think the military is all about killing, or just us evil Americans (which you so evidently imply) are the ones who are into killing, then do some more research sir. Please look up the humanitarian aid efforts of the US Army and Marines, such as providing food, medicine, hospitals, education, and even livestock veterinarian access for Iraqi/Afghani farmers and civilians. There are many photos and videos available on the internet that display such good deeds done by the American soldiers, and they are not "hired killers".
